Karak:Karark District Sports Officer (DSO) has reportedly trained 14 new players, two of whom are female players, in the fiscal year 2024-25. The DSO also hosted 25 sports events in the same time frame. No information regarding the newly trained players, such as their names and performances at the provincial or national levels, has been made public. In the 2023-24 financial year, Rs. 3.29 million had been used by the DSO Karak on sports activities in a budget of Rs. 3.3 million. During the current 2024-25 financial year, Rs. 5.57 million had already been incurred by the office. Nevertheless, the total amount of allocated funds for this financial year hasn't been shared by the DSO, triggering the issue of fiscal transparency. As per the report published by the District Sports Office, Karak had 21 staff members in 2023-24, and the figure rose to 25 in 2024-25. The report asserts that the DSO has produced 14 new players, two of whom are female athletes. The distribution of new p...

Merit Violation and Illegal Appointments in KPK Sports Directorate: The Future of Young Athletes at Stake

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Sports Directorate is seriously accused of merit violations and illegal appointments on the pretext of additional charges. The hapless handling of administrative affairs and politically motivated decisions are jeopardizing the future of young athletes. KPK Sports Directorate has emerged as a center of anomalies where people with no sports background whatsoever are being posted on senior positions. In a mind-boggling instance, an officer who was listed as dead on official documents was posted to the Directorate. Furthermore, deputed officers with no sports management experience are being given preference, bringing the Directorate to the verge of breakdown. The absence of transparency and merit-based recruitment is causing serious concern among sports experts. The habit of awarding extra charge to influential persons without adhering to the set legal processes has gone haywire. Numerous officers who are not qualified and skilled enough have been entrust...

The Silent Youth Centers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The dust had settled, not on the construction sites, but on unresolved questions. Deep in the center of Peshawar, a reporter tapped his pen on a pile of shiny photographs, the pictures of newly constructed Youth Centers taunting him with their silent promise. Thirty-five districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were being gifted these centers, designed to empower the youth of the region, but the details, the blood of accountability, remained obstinately hidden. It started with a humble query, submitted under the Right to Information Act on March 17, 2025. Sahai, an old hand at journalism with a keen sense of smell for transparency, wanted to shed light on the reality of these promising buildings. He wished to know the price, the timeline, the very heartbeat of these projects. The reply, however, was a photo gallery of facades – places and images, without substance. "They sent me postcards, not answers," Sahai growled, anger evident in his tone. "Where is the budget? The dea...

Khyber Sports Funds: Demand for Transparency

An aura of obscurity surrounds sports funds allocation in Khyber district, where important details are lacking in public reports. Accounts point to the absence of transparency in spending for tournaments such as football, tug-of-war, and cricket. Essential Gaps in Transparency Require Answers: #Participation: How many teams took part in each tournament? #Duration: How long did each tournament last? #PlayerCompensation: What was the daily allowance (DA) given to every athlete? #TotalExpenditure: How much did every tournament cost? #Sponsorship: Were the tournaments privately or government-sponsored? #AthleteAchievements: Did any sportspersons from the district attain national or international acclaim in 2023-24 and 2024-25? These basic questions are left unanswered, hampering public scrutiny and raising doubts regarding the judicious spend of sports money. The present District Sports Officer (DSO) of Khyber has confirmed that the incidents in question took place ...

Sports Funds: Development or Special Interests?

Every year, billions of rupees are allocated for the promotion of sports in Pakistan, but the real question is: does this money actually reach the athletes? The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) distributes funds to various sports federations, provincial sports boards, and specific projects. However, are these funds being utilized properly, or are they benefiting only certain individuals and institutions? From 2019 to 2024, the Pakistan Sports Board disbursed millions of rupees to several federations, including: Pakistan Hockey Federation : Rs. 591.5 million Pakistan Athletics Federation : Rs. 692.5 million Pakistan Football Federation : Rs. 350 million But the key question remains: was this money actually spent on athletes? Many players still lack basic facilities, and funding for several sports remains either limited or suspiciously managed. Can Federal Funds Reach Football Teams in Bannu and Lakki Marwat? Bannu and Lakki Marwat are known for their talented football ...

The game remained intense as Charsadda DFA scored the opening goal, but New Shaheen quickly equalized. As the match ended 1-1 in regulation time, the decision came down to a penalty shootout. In the penalty round, Charsadda DFA converted three out of five penalties, while New Shaheen Peshawar netted four out of five, securing the win. Decade of Dedication, Zero Security: Charsadda's Sports Coaches Left in Limbo

For more than a decade, the daily wage coaches at Abdul Wali Khan Sports Complex in Charsadda have worked tirelessly with their hearts and skills to develop talent in the area. However, they are stuck in a cycle of uncertainty, not being given permanent jobs that rightfully belong to them.   As approved BPS-16 coaching jobs lie idle since 2017, these passionate coaches, specialists in football, cricket, badminton, and hockey, fight to survive, their futures uncertain. Finance Department records verify six empty, fully funded posts, a contrast to the Sports Directorate's empty assurances. Other districts have experienced hiring, but Charsadda's coaches, qualified and experienced as they are, are ignored time and time again. This is not an isolated Charsadda problem; it's a symptom of a broader affliction. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province as a whole, talented sport professionals are being driven into unsustainable daily wage situations by bureaucratic momentum and the l...

Drowning in Neglect: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Swimming Future at Stake

The serene waters of the swimming pool at Peshawar's Sports Complex remain undisturbed, a stark reflection of the neglect that has engulfed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's swimming scene. With the National Games looming, uncertainty hangs heavy over the province's swimmers, their future seemingly adrift in a sea of apathy. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Swimming Association's failure to kickstart activities has left the province's swimmers treading water, their performance at the Quaid-e-Azam Games a testament to this neglect. As the National Games approach, the situation remains murky, with no clarity on which swimmers will represent the province. While other sports have conducted trials and announced teams, swimming remains shrouded in ambiguity. The absence of competitions and a clear selection policy has cast a long shadow over the province's hopes of securing medals in the 32 swimming events. The sport's decline is a stark contrast to the attention it received...

Faded Glory: The Shadow Over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Sports Associations

Within the wild landscape of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where athletic spirit should flourish, a disturbing tale is revealed. Thirty-eight sports associations, which should be the foundation of sporting prowess, are empty shells, their potential growth halted by a network of nepotism, complacency, and institutional neglect. The tale starts under the illusion of strong club organisations. In practice, the sports scene in the province is an empty field with a few hardcore martial arts clubs fighting against oblivion. The province's crowded capital, Peshawar, reflects the same emptiness, its sports dynamism shrinking to a bare flicker. These clubs, charged with developing talent and brokering important sponsorships, have become stagnated lakes, controlled by entrenched family dynasties. Elections, in theory the foundation of democratic government, are turned into farcical rituals, rubber-stamping the status quo. The provincial sports directorate, responsible for oversight, loo...

KP Sports Department Fails to Provide Information, Journalist Demands Transparency!

A journalist and concerned citizen of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is facing complete silence from the Provincial Sports Directorate’s Work and Implementation Department. His legitimate demand for transparency regarding the region’s sports infrastructure has been met with an alarming lack of response from the Directorate of Implementations and Work under the Sports and Youth Affairs Department. The journalist had formally requested crucial details about completed sports complexes, the condition of hockey stadiums, ongoing construction projects, and the status of specific grounds such as Islamia College Hockey Ground and Abdul Wali Khan Hockey Turf. His petition, filed on January 7, 2025 , also sought information about department staff, particularly those responsible for the maintenance and implementation of sports projects. However, despite the significance of these queries, the department has failed to respond. After waiting for two months, on March 11, 2025 , the journalist was compe...

Shattered Dreams, Broken Nets: Cricket Academy of Peshawar in Crisis

The now-defunct Maazullah Khan Cricket Academy in Peshawar Cantt, a cricketing nursery where dreams were once nurtured, now rings with the sound of disappointment. Its nets, torn and frayed, dangle like spectres of a glorious past. Its pitches, punctured with holes, look more like an abandoned field than a practice ground. This harsh truth casts a long shadow over the dreams of aspiring young cricketers who hope to follow their idols. It's ironic. Five coaches, in charge of turning raw talent, oversee this sorry state of neglect. Even Abbas Afridi, Pakistan's fast bowler and national star, practicing among the ruins, underlines the sorry state of neglect at the academy. How would aspiring players manage to thrive in such a godforsaken place when national stars are subjected to such dreadful conditions? The question echoes: whose job is it to save this sinking ship? Are the coaches, apathetic to the academy's fate, remiss in their responsibility? Or has bureaucrati...

Shadow Games: How Sports Complexes Turn into Rent-a-Halls

The internet was abuzz with a strange revelation. The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) Peshawar Coaching and Training Center, following a Right to Information application, had posted its 2025 activities. But what the website revealed was not a display of sporting excellence but a strange combination of badminton trials, army competitions, intelligence seminars, and even college tournaments – all under the banner of "sports activities." The virtual trail, laid bare now, told a story far different from the center's mission. January experienced badminton trials and cricket team stays, with payments in cash changing hands but undisclosed. February became a rental point, complete with an Intelligence Bureau seminar, military competitions, Cantonment Board games, and even Shaheed Benazir Bhutto College tournaments. The hostel was used as a revolving door, which hosted blind players as well as military personnel.   March's records were no less confounding. Under-22 Khyber...

Peshawar Games 2024: A Bitter Story of Discrimination Revealed

The 22nd Provincial Games in Peshawar, held recently, have left an indelible mark of ingrained discrimination against women sportswomen. The event, designed to celebrate sporting excellence, has instead revealed the stark gender disparities that exist in Pakistani sports. Women athletes have also raised severe complaints regarding the huge difference in Daily Allowances (DA) between them and men. Men were given DA for 4-5 days, whereas women only got 2-3 days, while the games continued for four days. This disparity is a patent disregard of equality. The argument of "savings" and "reduced costs" is a mere facade of excuse hiding sheer discrimination. The paltry amount of 1000 rupees a day to women is far too little, particularly in today's economic times. This explanation reflects a callous disregard for the minimum necessities of female players. The victims are calling for urgent action to correct this injustice during the National Games 2025 in Kara...

Rotten Game: Nepotism, Corruption, and the Silent Death of KPK Sports

Musratullah Jan, an senior sports   journalist, gazed upon the stark report placed before him, the words searing his conscience like embers. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Department, a supposed stronghold of sporting potential, had degenerated into a cesspit of corruption and nepotism. The arrival fields and crowded stadiums, once beacons of hope, now resonated with the empty sounds of dashed hopes and lost dreams. He'd worked for months, sending out RTI pleas that were ignored with deafening silence, solving the squalid jigsaw. Officers with years of grip on their postings used political muscle as a mallet, demolishing the ambitions of deserving minds. Their stranglehold was tight, their tactics as gloomy as the darkness they made their home in. The worst crime, however, was the open plunder of state resources. Unrelated government officials, ghosts in the machine, took up residence in sports department houses, using them as personal fiefdoms. They diverted electricit...

Open Sports Forum in Peshawar Reveals Lack of Interest by Sports Associations – Just 2 Out of 28 Show Up

Peshawar: District Government and Regional Sports Officer (RSO) conducted an open forum at Shah Tehmas Stadium, Peshawar, to discuss sports issues. But only two out of 28 registered sports associations in the city showed up for the event, demonstrating a stunning indifference towards solving sports-related issues.   Ironically, these groups often complain about there being no sports activities, yet when provided an opportunity to present their complaints and find solutions, they did not turn up. During the forum, 10 complaints were made in total—6 against the District Administration Peshawar and 4 are being forwarded to the Directorate of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. 5 of these problems were solved instantly.   Concerns highlighted by participants were the provision of inter-club tournaments, coaching courses, and fixed regular employment for coaches. According to experts, if sporting associations themselves are not willing to develop sports, how can ther...

Battagram's Sporting Spirit Fights On Despite Funding Fumbles

In the heart of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Battagram's sporting scene is a tale of resilience against the odds. While the district's Provincial Sports Directorate office operates from a humble, rented eight-marla building, a determined spirit pushes forward, organizing sporting events despite severe resource shortages. The numbers tell a story of both dedication and disparity. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, a commendable 28 sports events were held, with a budget of Rs. 11 lakh 34 thousand 950. However, the following year paints a different picture. In just six months, 13 events were organized, but with a significantly reduced budget of only Rs. 1,97,200. This sharp decline in funding raises serious questions. While the district sports office's expenses remained relatively consistent, the allocation for actual sporting activities plummeted. How were 13 events managed with such a limited budget? Are these events truly happening on the ground, or are they merely existing on pa...
