Peshawar Games 2024: A Bitter Story of Discrimination Revealed

The 22nd Provincial Games in Peshawar, held recently, have left an indelible mark of ingrained discrimination against women sportswomen. The event, designed to celebrate sporting excellence, has instead revealed the stark gender disparities that exist in Pakistani sports.

Women athletes have also raised severe complaints regarding the huge difference in Daily Allowances (DA) between them and men. Men were given DA for 4-5 days, whereas women only got 2-3 days, while the games continued for four days. This disparity is a patent disregard of equality.

The argument of "savings" and "reduced costs" is a mere facade of excuse hiding sheer discrimination. The paltry amount of 1000 rupees a day to women is far too little, particularly in today's economic times. This explanation reflects a callous disregard for the minimum necessities of female players.

The victims are calling for urgent action to correct this injustice during the National Games 2025 in Karachi. They demand equal facilities and treatment, unencumbered by any kind of gender discrimination.

The continuation of such discriminatory actions threatens the future of Pakistani women in sports. It highlights the need for systemic reforms to provide equal opportunities and fair treatment.

The event has caused outrage across social media platforms, with people deploring the naked discrimination and calling for responsibility.

The Peshawar Games 2025 have exposed an odious tradition of discrimination against women competitors. This case should act as an eye-opener for sports administrators to adopt serious reforms and help gender equality become a tangible reality and not a mere notion.
