Khyber Sports Funds: Demand for Transparency

An aura of obscurity surrounds sports funds allocation in Khyber district, where important details are lacking in public reports. Accounts point to the absence of transparency in spending for tournaments such as football, tug-of-war, and cricket.

Essential Gaps in Transparency Require Answers:

#Participation: How many teams took part in each tournament?

#Duration: How long did each tournament last?

#PlayerCompensation: What was the daily allowance (DA) given to every athlete?

#TotalExpenditure: How much did every tournament cost?

#Sponsorship: Were the tournaments privately or government-sponsored?

#AthleteAchievements: Did any sportspersons from the district attain national or international acclaim in 2023-24 and 2024-25?

These basic questions are left unanswered, hampering public scrutiny and raising doubts regarding the judicious spend of sports money.

The present District Sports Officer (DSO) of Khyber has confirmed that the incidents in question took place during their time of office. Nevertheless, this answer highlights the imperative for an intensive probe into the records of the outgoing regime. Retrieving and making these records public is important to ensure #Accountability.

Besides that, the Deputy Commissioner of Khyber used a large sum of money, millions, in Independence Day celebrations in 2024. However, details on how this was spent have not been easily forthcoming. The facts were released only under the #RightToInformation Act after the lapse of about seven months, adding to fears of lack of transparency. That there was a delay of more than seven months raises grave issues regarding transparency of fund management.

The sportsmen and people of #KhyberDistrict deserve detailed and transparent reporting of what is being done with their #SportsFunds.
