Rotten Game: Nepotism, Corruption, and the Silent Death of KPK Sports
Musratullah Jan, an senior sports journalist, gazed upon the stark report placed
before him, the words searing his conscience like embers. The Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa Sports Department, a supposed stronghold of sporting potential, had
degenerated into a cesspit of corruption and nepotism. The arrival fields and
crowded stadiums, once beacons of hope, now resonated with the empty sounds of
dashed hopes and lost dreams.
He'd worked for months, sending out RTI pleas that were
ignored with deafening silence, solving the squalid jigsaw. Officers with years
of grip on their postings used political muscle as a mallet, demolishing the
ambitions of deserving minds. Their stranglehold was tight, their tactics as
gloomy as the darkness they made their home in.
The worst crime, however, was the open plunder of state
resources. Unrelated government officials, ghosts in the machine, took up
residence in sports department houses, using them as personal fiefdoms. They
diverted electricity and gas, draining the coffers of the department. Their
arrogance was an insult to every struggling athlete.
Jan remembered the young aspirants he had interviewed, their
eyes shining with visions of representing their province, their nation. Now, he
pictured those same eyes clouded with disappointment, their dreams shattered by
the burden of institutionalized corruption.
He recalled a story of a brilliant young cricketer who had
to leave the game as he could not afford the kit, while public money was
squandered by those in power. Another fine sportsman, a runner, deprived of an
equal opportunity because she would not bow to the will of a politically
influential officer.
The department was silent. "Previous officers'
decisions," they'd grumbled, a cop-out for their inaction. But who made
them accountable? Who was concerned about the athletes whose futures were being
stolen?
Jan knew he couldn't keep quiet. He had to lay bare the rot,
to call for justice. He wrote his report, a blistering indictment of the
department's rot, calling for swift action:
Enact the transfer and posting policy: Clean out the rotten
officers and bring in new thinking.
Evict the illegal occupants: Recover the plundered resources
and put them back to their proper use.
Investigate and prosecute: Hold the corrupt individuals
responsible for what they have done.
Destroy illegal homes: Give a clear signal that impunity is
not acceptable.
He was aware it wouldn't be simple. The mighty would resist,
their networks well-entrenched. But Jan was steadfast. He would be the voice of
the voiceless, the protector of the forgotten sports persons. He would reveal
the stinking game and insist on a level playing field.
The battle for the heart of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sport had
just commenced.
