Sports Funds: Development or Special Interests?

Every year, billions of rupees are allocated for the promotion of sports in Pakistan, but the real question is: does this money actually reach the athletes? The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) distributes funds to various sports federations, provincial sports boards, and specific projects. However, are these funds being utilized properly, or are they benefiting only certain individuals and institutions?

From 2019 to 2024, the Pakistan Sports Board disbursed millions of rupees to several federations, including:

  • Pakistan Hockey Federation: Rs. 591.5 million
  • Pakistan Athletics Federation: Rs. 692.5 million
  • Pakistan Football Federation: Rs. 350 million

But the key question remains: was this money actually spent on athletes? Many players still lack basic facilities, and funding for several sports remains either limited or suspiciously managed.

Can Federal Funds Reach Football Teams in Bannu and Lakki Marwat?

Bannu and Lakki Marwat are known for their talented football players, but these regions have yet to benefit from significant federal funding. While the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) receives hundreds of millions of rupees annually, has any portion of these funds been spent on the development of football in these areas?

Another major question arises: does the Pakistan Sports Board recognize district-level sports associations? If so, can district teams apply directly for funding from the PSB?

In principle, if the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Board or relevant district football associations formally request funding from the Pakistan Sports Board, they should be eligible for support. However, in practice, most funds are spent through central federations, often with a lack of transparency.

How Can Bannu and Lakki Marwat Secure Federal Funding?

To ensure federal support for football development in these regions, the following steps must be taken:

  1. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Football Association must demand direct funding from the federal government.
  2. Local coaches and players must raise their voices through transparent reporting and media campaigns.
  3. An audit of the Pakistan Football Federation's funds should be conducted to determine whether players from underprivileged areas are receiving their fair share of resources.

If these steps are not taken, young footballers in Bannu and Lakki Marwat will likely continue to be ignored, while federal funds remain concentrated in the hands of a few select individuals and institutions.
