Lala Ayub's Shame: A Sports Legacy Buried Under Mountains of Neglect

Peshawar's erstwhile proud Lala Ayub Hockey Ground, a nursery of sporting hopes , is today a grim testament to bureaucratic indifference. A decade -long slide into filth has reduced this important sporting complex to a festering garbage dump, an ignominy perpetuated by the very institution responsible for its upkeep: the Provincial Sports Directorate.

The view is a travesty of athletic greatness. Off to one side of the entrance, a gigantic, expanding rubbish dump ridicules the dreams of competitors. Plastic waste, discarded diapers, stinking food trash, and even shattered sports gear are part of a poisonous brocade, proof of institutional breakdown. This isn't a wild dumping site; it's in the backyard of the Sports Directorate itself, tainted by its own staff, from groundskeepers to ancillary workers.

Broken Promises, Hollow Agreements: An offer of Rs. 60,000 monthly to WSSP, a ray of hope, was lost in the mire of official red tape. This is one instance of inertia that grips the Directorate.

An Unsafe, Futile Bonfire: Helplessness drove a person to acts of desperation—burning trash. Even that poor substitute solution was quickly stomped out by Cantonment Area security, illustrative of absent foresight and coordination.
Athletes' and residents' silent agony:

The flies and filthy condition have made it intolerable to train for tennis and hockey athletes. Kids who once willingly practiced sport are compelled to walk on a deadly trap set by dirty substances.


Public health risk and financial hardship: Food street sellers who sustain lives are in destruction since their lives as businesses are invaded by infectious disease-causing flies, exposing them and clients to risk to life.

Shuffles in the Provincial Sports Directorate have been a heartless farce. Each new administrator comes in, sees the crisis, and then leaves, allowing the issue to grow. It is not just neglect; it is a deliberate disregard for the welfare of the community and the history of a previously loved sports ground.

Lala Ayub Hockey Ground's deterioration is a symptom of a deeper malaise—a culture of impunity and lack of accountability. The question is no longer "Who is responsible?" but "When will they be held accountable?"


Immediate and thorough cleanup: Not a stopgap patch, but a sustainable waste management system.
Transparency and accountability: A thorough investigation into the Sports Directorate's failure to tackle this crisis.
Community involvement: Engage residents, athletes, and vendors in developing long-term solutions.
Restoration of Lala Ayub's glory: A commitment to transforming this space back into a thriving sports hub.
The fate of Lala Ayub Hockey Ground now hangs on the scales. Will the authorities for once step up to the plate, or will this old historic landmark be allowed to symbolize bureaucratic rot? The citizens of Peshawar deserve better. They deserve a clean, safe, and lively place to play sport and recreation.
