The Dismal Reality of Horse Riding in Pakistan: A Sport for the Elite, Paid for by the Common People

A hundred years ago, the landscape of transportation and leisure in Pakistan was vastly different. Horses were a common sight, a necessity for mobility and livelihood, while only the affluent could afford the luxury of owning a car. Fast forward to today, the scenario has reversed dramatically: cars have become ubiquitous, while horses—once a symbol of a common man's life—are now reserved for the wealthy. In today’s market, a decent horse costs around 1 million rupees, a price that is out of reach for most Pakistanis. Beyond the initial purchase, the costs of maintaining a horse, including feeding and care, are substantial, making horse ownership a privilege of the rich. This stark reality highlights the growing socio-economic divide in Pakistan, where even recreational activities like horse riding are becoming exclusive to the elite. Amidst this backdrop, the recent allocation of over 180 million rupees by the sports directorate for the development of horse riding clubs in Khy

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate Accused of Misappropriating Achievements

Peshawar, Pakistan: The sports association in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has vehemently criticized the actions of the provincial sports directorate, accusing them of attempting to claim credit for the achievements of various sports associations. According to reports, a top official from the directorate has been contacting different associations, seeking information about their players and accomplishments. The association has expressed concerns that the directorate's intention behind this move is to appropriate the hard work and success of individual associations. By compiling a list of top players, the directorate aims to present them as their own, potentially compromising the associations' recognition and resources. Sources within the association have revealed that the provincial sports directorate has not provided any funding to the associations for the past three years. This lack of financial support has hindered their ability to organize competitions and develop players.

Sports Directorate Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: A Tale of Mismanagement and Wasted Funds

The District Sports Officer Peshawar, a key entity responsible for promoting sports in the provincial capital, has come under scrutiny for its dismal performance and questionable expenditure. A recent report revealed that despite receiving substantial funds from the provincial government, the DSO organized only two events in the entire year of 2023. The report, which was submitted eight months after the initial request, detailed the expenditure of over 4.5 million rupees on these two events. One event, a sports competition held on August 14, 2023, included fireworks that cost a staggering 1.55 million rupees. Additionally, the DSO admitted to spending 70 liters of petrol while failing to register a single club in Peshawar during the year. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government's sports policy of 2018 mandates district sports officers to organize competitions, register clubs, and promote sports facilities. However, the DSO Peshawar's performance has been far from satisfactory,

Tour de Peshawar Aims to Promote Cycling and Create Opportunities

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cycling Association Chairman Nisar Ahmad has announced the upcoming Tour de Peshawar, a unique cycling race set to take place next month. Expressing concern about the prevalence of Chinese cycles among athletes in the region, Ahmad highlighted the physical problems associated with these bikes. In an effort to promote racing cycles and their numerous benefits, Ahmad is actively working to attract athletes from the China Cycling scene. He cited the example of a Peshawar sportsman who, after transitioning to racing cycles, secured a well-paying job and achieved a top-ten ranking within his department. Ahmad emphasized the need to educate the public about the drawbacks of Chinese cycles and encourage them to embrace racing bikes. To facilitate this transition, the association offers morning and evening classes and practical training to help athletes learn how to use racing cycles effectively. In addition to the Tour de Peshawar, only racing cycle athletes wil

Despite being allocated significant funds, the DSO only organized two events: a children's event costing 3 million rupees and a fireworks display on August 14th, totaling 1.55 million rupees. Additionally, the DSO revealed spending 70 liters of patrol while admitting to no club registration efforts in Peshawar. This raises questions about the efficient use of public funds for sports promotion.
