Sports Directorate Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: A Tale of Mismanagement and Wasted Funds

The District Sports Officer Peshawar, a key entity responsible for promoting sports in the provincial capital, has come under scrutiny for its dismal performance and questionable expenditure. A recent report revealed that despite receiving substantial funds from the provincial government, the DSO organized only two events in the entire year of 2023.

The report, which was submitted eight months after the initial request, detailed the expenditure of over 4.5 million rupees on these two events. One event, a sports competition held on August 14, 2023, included fireworks that cost a staggering 1.55 million rupees. Additionally, the DSO admitted to spending 70 liters of petrol while failing to register a single club in Peshawar during the year.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government's sports policy of 2018 mandates district sports officers to organize competitions, register clubs, and promote sports facilities. However, the DSO Peshawar's performance has been far from satisfactory, with no new players emerging and a lack of sports competitions in the city.

Despite receiving a monthly salary of approximately 100000 rupees, the DSO has failed to utilize the funds effectively. A breakdown of the DSO's expenses reveals that a significant portion is spent on salaries, petrol, and other administrative costs, leaving little for actual sports development.

The mismanagement at the DSO Peshawar is not an isolated incident. A broader look at the sports directorate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reveals a similar pattern of inefficiency and lack of accountability. With crores of rupees being spent annually, it is disheartening to see such a neglect of sports development and a blatant disregard for public funds.
