PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has launched a province-wide grassroots
talent hunt aimed at finding the young athletes who could represent the
province and Pakistan on national and international stages.
The Directorate General of Sports,
in a directive issued from Peshawar Sports Complex on September 18, 2026,
instructed all Deputy Commissioners to immediately implement the Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa Sports Policy and activate a district-level talent identification
drive.
The initiative brings education and
sports authorities together, directing District Education Officers and District
Sports Officers to prepare coordinated action plans for their respective
districts.
The focus is not only on established
sporting centres. Officials have been tasked with scouting promising athletes
in public and private schools, local sports clubs, communities and remote,
underserved areas.
The selected athletes are expected
to receive professional coaching, structured training and opportunities to
compete at higher levels, creating a pathway from grassroots sport to elite
competition.
For a province with a large youth
population and considerable sporting potential, the real significance of the
initiative will depend on how effectively talent is identified beyond major
cities and what happens after selection.
If implemented transparently and
consistently, the programme could give rural and underrepresented athletes
access to opportunities often concentrated in urban centres.
The directive marks the beginning,
not the finish line. The real test will be whether the newly discovered talent
receives sustained coaching, facilities, competition and long-term support
needed to become Pakistan’s future sporting stars.
