PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Hockey Association is still waiting for hockey equipment meant for its women players, with the matter reportedly stuck in an inquiry for nearly four months.

The equipment, including goalkeeper kits, hockey sticks, hockey balls and other essential items, was reportedly kept with the former Female Additional Director General of Sports and later placed at the female hostel.

The KP Hockey Association subsequently approached the relevant authorities in writing, requesting that the equipment be handed over to the association for use by its players.

Instead, the association was informed that an inquiry into the matter was under way.

Nearly four months later, the inquiry has yet to produce a final decision.

According to information available, former Director General Sports Tashfeen Haider referred the matter to the Director of Merged Districts. However, no final decision has reportedly been taken there either.

Provincial Hockey Association official Syed Zahir Shah has also written a formal letter regarding the issue, but the equipment has still not been handed over to the association.

The issue raises serious questions about the handling of sports equipment purchased or allocated for athletes.

Why does a routine matter involving players’ basic sporting equipment require an inquiry lasting four months?

More importantly, where is the equipment now, who has custody of it, and what is the documented status of the inquiry?

The questions do not end there:

·         Who initiated the inquiry and on what grounds?

·         Who is currently responsible for the equipment?

·         Is there a complete inventory of the items?

·         Has the equipment remained unused during the inquiry?

·         Has any inspection been conducted to verify its condition?

·         Why has no final decision been communicated to the Hockey Association?

·         Who will be held accountable if the equipment is damaged, lost or rendered unusable?

For women hockey players, goalkeeper kits, sticks and balls are not administrative files to be kept pending indefinitely. They are basic equipment required for training and competition.

The KP Sports authorities therefore need to provide more than a simple statement that “an inquiry is under way.”

They should disclose the status of the inquiry, identify the authority responsible for the decision and explain why the equipment has remained unavailable to the association for months. Four months of inquiry. Equipment still unavailable. Players still waiting.

The matter now demands a clear answer on custody, accountability and the final decision on the players’ equipment.
