PESHAWAR: Questions are being raised over the state of hockey at government schools in Peshawar after only five teams took part in the Inter-School District Hockey Tournament, despite eight schools initially assuring participation.

According to available government data, Peshawar district has 144 government high schools and 51 government higher secondary schools, making a total of 195 institutions.

However, only eight schools assured organizers that they would send teams to the district-level hockey tournament. Of these, just five teams actually arrived and participated, while three schools failed to turn up despite their commitment.

The key question is: Who will hold these three schools accountable?

Were the concerned principals asked to explain their absence? Were the Physical Education Teachers questioned about why their teams were not brought to the tournament? Was any report prepared regarding the non-participation? And if there was no valid reason for the absence, was any administrative action taken?

The bigger question is about the overall state of hockey in Peshawar's government schools.

If the district has 195 government high and higher secondary schools, why did only five teams actually reach the district hockey tournament?

If Physical Education Teachers are appointed in government schools and sports activities are part of the education system, then where are the school-level hockey teams? Where is regular hockey training taking place? Where is the hockey equipment? And how many government schools are actually running hockey programmes on a regular basis?

This is not simply a matter of three teams failing to attend one tournament. It raises questions about the monitoring, implementation and accountability of the school-level hockey system in Peshawar.

The Education Department and district sports authorities should clarify what action, if any, was taken against the schools that committed to participate but failed to send their teams.

They should also disclose how many government high and higher secondary schools in Peshawar currently have hockey teams, qualified Physical Education Teachers, hockey equipment, playing facilities and regular training programmes.

A hockey tournament alone cannot revive the national game. The real foundation of hockey is the development of players at school level.

If there are 195 government high and higher secondary schools in Peshawar but only five teams reached the district hockey tournament, the responsible authorities need to explain where the practical school-level hockey programme is.
