Rs 700 Million in Alleged Irregularities, Incomplete Projects and a New Scheme: When Will the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate Answer the Public's Questions?

Serious questions continue to surround the
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Sports Directorate's development projects. If the
"1,000 Sports Facilities Project" and the Union Council-level sports
facilities scheme were discontinued without any official explanation, the
public deserves to know why these projects were abandoned.
In 2026, the Provincial Inspection Team
reportedly identified alleged financial irregularities and embezzlement worth
nearly Rs 700 million in these projects. The issue was initially highlighted by
the Adviser to the Chief Minister on Sports. However, after Dawn
published a report on the alleged irregularities, the matter gradually
disappeared from public discussion, and the projects were subsequently
discontinued the same year.
Meanwhile, the National Accountability Bureau
(NAB) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is investigating the case and has already obtained the
relevant records from the Provincial Sports Directorate. Despite this, no
official update has been provided regarding the progress of the investigation,
whether responsibility has been fixed, or whether any disciplinary or legal
action has been taken against those allegedly involved.
Now, in the 2026-27 fiscal year, the Project
Implementation Unit (PIU) has launched a new Sports Development Scheme.
According to available information, several individuals associated with the
previous project are expected to be accommodated under this new initiative.
This raises an important question: if the previous schemes were allegedly
marred by financial irregularities and administrative failures, who has been
held accountable? Has any official been punished, suspended, or prosecuted? If
action has been taken, why have the details not been made public?
The government should also disclose how many
projects under the previous schemes were completed, how much public money was
released and spent, how many projects remain incomplete, and what tangible
benefits were delivered to athletes and local communities. The status of
unfinished projects in the southern districts, Malakand, Swat, Chitral, and
other parts of the province should also be made public.
At the same time, a new Sports Development
Scheme worth Rs 85 million has been approved using taxpayers' money. Before
launching another development initiative, the government should first release
the complete record of the previous two schemes, including expenditures,
payments, incomplete projects, NAB's investigation, and any action taken
against those found responsible. Transparency and accountability are essential
to restoring public confidence. Until these questions are answered, every new
sports development project will continue to face scrutiny.
