PESHAWAR: A comparison of recruitment advertisements issued by the Directorate General of Sports, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reveals significant changes in the department's hiring policy for coaches over the past nine years. The analysis is based on the 2017 National Testing Service (NTS) advertisement and the July 2026 Educational Testing and Evaluation Agency (ETEA) recruitment notice.
According to the available documents, the 2017 recruitment policy required applicants for Deputy Coach (BPS-10) positions to have a minimum qualification of Second Division Matriculation, with an age limit of 25 to 40 years. The policy was designed to accommodate experienced candidates with extensive coaching backgrounds.
In contrast, the July 2026 advertisement has substantially revised the eligibility criteria. The minimum educational qualification has been increased to Second Division Intermediate (FA/FSc or equivalent), while the age limit has been reduced to 20 to 32 years, reflecting the department's shift toward recruiting younger and academically qualified coaches.
The department has also eased the sports eligibility requirements to encourage greater participation from local talent.
Under the 2017 policy, candidates were required to possess three years of coaching experience and must have secured first or second position at the national level, making the eligibility criteria highly restrictive.
However, the 2026 recruitment policy has reduced the coaching experience requirement to two years. More importantly, candidates who have achieved positions at the provincial or regional level are now eligible to apply for Junior Coach positions, broadening opportunities for athletes who may not have competed successfully at the national level.
For Cricket Coach positions, the department has introduced sport-specific requirements. Applicants must possess a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Level-1 Coaching Certificate along with experience in regional or national cricket tournaments.
The recruitment mechanism has also undergone a notable change. The 2017 hiring process was conducted through the National Testing Service (NTS), where quota distribution was comparatively less detailed. The 2026 recruitment, however, is being managed by the Educational Testing and Evaluation Agency (ETEA), with clearly defined quotas for women, minorities, and Zones I to V, aimed at ensuring transparent recruitment and equitable representation across all districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Sports analysts believe these reforms could create broader employment opportunities for grassroots athletes and young sports graduates while strengthening the province's coaching structure through a more inclusive recruitment policy.
