PESHAWAR: Despite winning medals at national competitions, Kabaddi players in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continue to struggle without basic sports facilities.

KP Kabaddi Association Secretary Sultan Bari has revealed that the province's female team recently secured a bronze medal at the National Games in Karachi, while the men's team won the gold medal at the Quaid-e-Azam Games. However, the players still do not have a proper Kabaddi mat for training.

According to Bari, former Director General Sports Abdul Nasir Mohmand had promised to provide a Kabaddi mat and complete cement work for the playing area after the team's gold medal victory. Following his transfer, neither promise was fulfilled.

"If our players can win gold and bronze medals without proper facilities, imagine what they could achieve with modern infrastructure," Bari said.

He stated that Kabaddi is widely played across Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Swabi, Charsadda, Nowshera, Peshawar and several other districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Despite its popularity, the provincial association has not received government funding since 2018.

Bari said repeated requests for financial support have gone unanswered, forcing the association to keep the sport alive through personal efforts and limited resources.

He urged the provincial government to establish Kabaddi teams in institutions such as Police, Sui Northern Gas and the Airport Security Force (ASF), arguing that athletes need employment opportunities alongside sports development.

He also pointed out that Punjab's Kabaddi players enjoy greater success because they receive better facilities, institutional backing and professional opportunities.

Bari added that part of the Kabaddi mat provided by the federation is still lying at Gulbahar Girls College, while female teams continue training with the support of dedicated college sports teachers despite severe shortages.

Having spent 45 years promoting Kabaddi and over 20 years serving as a coach and referee, Bari said the province's talented youth deserve better support from the Sports Directorate to compete at the highest level.
