Abdul Wali Khan Sports Complex has come under renewed scrutiny after viral social media images showed a man watering the hockey turf manually with a pipe, despite the facility having been equipped with a modern sprinkler system as part of a multi-million-rupee project.

According to sources, the hockey turf in Charsadda was installed at an estimated cost of nearly Rs120 million. The project included a modern irrigation and sprinkler system intended to maintain the turf according to international standards. However, only a few years after its installation, the sprinkler system now appears to be non-functional, forcing staff to rely on traditional water pipes to maintain the surface.

The images have triggered serious questions about the quality of the project, long-term maintenance, technical oversight, and the use of public funds in sports infrastructure schemes across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Sports circles argue that if a newly installed “modern” system can collapse within three to four years, then the condition of similar hockey turfs constructed or currently under development in other districts may also be questionable.

Over the past several years, the provincial government has spent hundreds of millions of rupees on hockey turfs, football grounds, and other sports infrastructure projects across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, many of these projects have repeatedly faced allegations of poor workmanship, substandard materials, weak monitoring, and lack of accountability.

Despite growing public concern, the District Sports Officer posted in Charsadda has yet to issue any formal response regarding the failed sprinkler system. Sources claim that repeated attempts to seek an official position were either ignored or not taken seriously by the relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, concerns are also being raised over the quality and transparency of another hockey turf currently under construction in Parachinar. Critics argue that if a turf installed in 2022 is already showing signs of serious technical failure by 2026, then the government must immediately conduct an independent audit of ongoing and completed projects.

Sports stakeholders and local observers have called on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sports adviser and Ali Amin Khan Gandapur to order an impartial investigation into sports infrastructure projects across the province to determine whether the work was actually carried out according to the approved PC-1 standards or merely completed on paper.

What was presented as a symbol of modern sports development is now being viewed by many as another example of expensive infrastructure struggling to survive without basic functionality.
