Coach Missing, Children Left Unsupervised at Peshawar Sports Complex for Nearly a Month

PESHAWAR: Serious questions are being raised over the
functioning of the coaching system at the Peshawar Sports Complex after young
children were found practicing table tennis without any coach or technical
supervision inside Arena Hall.
The situation was observed around 3:30 PM on May 6, where
two minor children were attempting to learn and practice table tennis despite
the absence of any trainer. According to sources, the daily-wage male table
tennis coach assigned to the facility has been absent for nearly a month due to
Ex-Pakistan leave, while no replacement arrangement has been made by the
authorities.
The incident has exposed what critics describe as a deeper
administrative failure within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sports structure,
particularly regarding grassroots athlete development and monitoring
mechanisms.
Parents bringing children to the sports complex reportedly
believe that proper coaching and technical training are being provided.
However, in reality, children are practicing on their own without guidance on
technique, footwork, grip control, stroke mechanics, or game fundamentals.
Sports experts argue that table tennis is a highly technical
sport where incorrect early habits can negatively impact long-term development.
They say simply hitting the ball across the table cannot be considered proper
training.
The absence of a coach for such an extended period has also
triggered concerns regarding accountability inside the Sports Directorate.
Questions are now being asked about why no substitute coach was appointed and
whether senior officials were even aware that children were attending
unsupervised sessions.
Critics say the issue reflects a larger pattern in public
sports institutions where infrastructure and official events receive more
attention than consistent coaching and athlete development.
The case also highlights the dependency of some training
programs on temporary daily-wage staff instead of structured and sustainable
coaching systems.
Observers believe the situation damages both athlete
development and public trust, especially among parents who expect government
sports facilities to provide professional supervision and learning opportunities
for children.
So far, no official response has been issued regarding the
prolonged absence of the coach or the lack of an alternative arrangement.
