Sports Funding System in KP Under Question: Neglect of Associations and Concerns Over Selective Grants

Serious questions are being raised over the sports funding system in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where sports associations claim that regular grant-in-aid support has largely stopped since 2020, while at the same time selective funding is being approved for specific events and individuals.
According to sports circles, there are around 38 registered sports associations in the province, but over the past several years, there has been little to no consistent financial support from the government. As a result, grassroots sports activities, local tournaments, and training programs have been severely affected.
Athletes and organizers say the lack of funding has weakened several sports disciplines, limiting opportunities for young players to develop and progress at competitive levels.
On the other hand, recent cabinet decisions approving grants for specific sports events and activities have also sparked debate. Sports stakeholders argue that when associations remain unfunded for long periods while selective events receive financial support, it raises concerns about imbalance and transparency in the system.
There are also concerns that politically influenced or selective distribution of grants may be affecting the internal structure of sports associations, where influence rather than merit could be playing a role in decision-making.
Experts believe that such practices not only weaken the institutional framework of sports associations but also directly impact grassroots development and ultimately the performance of athletes at higher levels.
In this context, key questions are being raised about whether there is a clear, transparent, and uniform funding policy for sports in the province, or whether decisions are being made on an ad-hoc or preferential basis.
Attempts were made to obtain comments from the Sports Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but no official response has been received so far.
