The District Sports Office Tank has come under scrutiny in the financial year 2025 as official figures reveal significant budget discrepancies, unusually high expenditures, and questions regarding the actual level of sports promotion in the district.

According to the financial data, the office was allocated an original budget of Rs. 11.26 million, while Rs. 9.32 million was released during the fiscal year. However, total expenditure surged to approximately Rs. 15.60 million, resulting in a deficit of nearly Rs. 6.27 million.

A major portion of the expenditure was incurred under salaries and allowances. Alarmingly, several salary-related heads show zero released budget, yet full expenditures were recorded, pointing toward serious issues in budget documentation and financial management practices.

In addition, under the “To Others” category, an amount of Rs. 7,062,500 forms a significant share of the total expenditure. This raises questions when assessed against the actual sports development outcomes on the ground.

Importantly, all these expenditures are claimed under the umbrella of sports promotion activities, however, local observations and public perception in Tank suggest that the number of sports events and tournaments held during 2025 does not appear to reflect the scale of spending, creating a noticeable gap between financial outlay and on-ground activity.

Operational expenses also show irregular patterns, with notable spending on POL (fuel), printing and publication, and miscellaneous heads. At the same time, several development-related and service-oriented allocations remain underutilized despite available funds.

The establishment record shows that out of 14 sanctioned posts, 13 are filled, while one key position remains vacant — the District Sports Officer (BPS-17). The workforce is heavily skewed toward lower-grade staff (mainly BPS-03), limiting the department’s administrative and technical capacity.

Experts suggest that the situation highlights not only financial irregularities but also a disconnect between declared sports promotion expenditures and actual grassroots-level sports development. They recommend a comprehensive audit, budget reconciliation, and stronger transparency and monitoring mechanisms to ensure accountability in public spending.
