Kohat: Despite repeated claims of promoting sports infrastructure, athletes in Kohat Sports Complex are reportedly struggling to find space for training after a newly constructed indoor hall was converted into a registration centre for Afghan refugees.

According to local sources, the indoor hall was built around a year ago for female sports activities and indoor games. However, instead of serving athletes regularly, the facility has reportedly hosted fewer sporting events while being used more often for non-sports activities.

The latest development has further deepened concerns among athletes, as NADRA authorities have now established a registration centre for Afghan refugees inside the same hall. This has significantly disrupted sports activities at the complex, forcing local players to search for alternative places to train.

Officials at the registration centre said the facility will continue operating at the sports complex until the refugee registration process is completed. Sources said the centre was set up four days ago, and since then the sports hall has remained unavailable for athletes.

Local players and members of the sports community say the district already lacks sufficient sports facilities, and the few available venues are increasingly being diverted for administrative or non-sporting purposes. They argue that when infrastructure specifically built for athletes is repurposed, it directly affects the development opportunities for young talent.

The situation has once again raised serious questions about sports management priorities in the district. Critics say that while new facilities are being built under the banner of sports development, their actual use reflects a mismatch between policy objectives and on-ground implementation.

For athletes in Kohat, the issue is simple: a venue built for sports is no longer serving sport, leaving players sidelined while administrative operations take over.
