Hassan Khel Sports Complex: Seven Years of Neglect, Youth Deprived of Facilities

Hassan Khel Sports Complex, located in the Hassan Khel sub-division of Peshawar, has been a stark example of government inaction and systemic negligence. Although the complex was constructed in 2018, seven years later it remains largely non-functional. The building exists, but essential sports infrastructure—including playable grounds, equipment, and administrative support—has yet to be provided.

Despite repeated official promises, the complex has not been equipped or managed to serve the needs of local youth. The responsibility of maintaining the facility has effectively fallen on the athletes themselves. Using personal resources and small donations, local youth have attempted to keep the complex partially usable, performing cleaning, minor repairs, and organizing makeshift sports activities. This is work that should have been carried out by the relevant government departments.

Local athletes and residents emphasize that if the complex were fully operational, it could serve as a hub for nurturing local talent and providing young people with structured, positive recreational activities. Currently, youth have no proper training grounds, coaching, or competitive opportunities. The absence of basic infrastructure severely limits the potential development of athletes and undermines youth engagement in productive and healthy pursuits.

Calls from social activists and sports community members to highlight this issue have had limited impact. Officials at higher levels, including the Directorate of Sports in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, have largely failed to respond with meaningful action. The lack of accountability has resulted in a facility that exists physically but fails in its primary purpose: to serve the youth and promote sports.

Hassan Khel’s youth are entitled to the same opportunities and resources as young people in other regions. Yet, after seven years, the complex remains incomplete and underutilized. Without urgent intervention and provision of essential facilities, the complex risks becoming another failed government project—an empty building recorded in reports, but with no real impact on the community it was intended to serve.

The Hassan Khel Sports Complex is not just a local issue; it reflects broader governance challenges in the region, including inadequate planning, poor monitoring, and a lack of commitment to youth development. The failure to operationalize a seven-year-old facility underscores systemic neglect and raises serious questions about government priorities and accountability.

Immediate action is needed: proper grounds, equipment, trained coaches, and administrative oversight must be provided. Without this, local youth will continue to be deprived of the opportunities they deserve, and the complex will remain a symbol of unfulfilled promises and bureaucratic inefficiency.
