KP Under-21 Games to Begin in Peshawar on January 20

Peshawar The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Under-21 Games will kick off on January 20 in Peshawar, bringing together more than 5,000 male and female athletes and officials from across the province. Officials are calling it the largest Under-21 sports event in KP’s history.

Director General Sports KP, Tashfeen Haider, shared details during a media briefing at the Peshawar Sports Complex. He said the games will feature competitions in 53 disciplines, including 35 for men and 18 for women. Director Sports Operations Jamshed Baloch, Project Director Arbab Faiz, Chief Coach Shafqatullah, and Administrator Yousaf Afridi were also present.

According to the DG Sports, the opening ceremony will be held at the historic Imran Khan Cricket Stadium, where Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Muhammad Sohail Afridi is expected to inaugurate the event. He added that, on the special instructions of Sports Adviser Taj Muhammad Tarand and under the supervision of Secretary Sports Muhammad Asif, all trials have been completed at the regional level.

Tashfeen Haider said that in team events, the winning team will receive a cash prize of Rs 100,000, while the runners-up will be awarded Rs 50,000. He also confirmed that special competitions have been included for persons with disabilities, such as wheelchair cricket and boccia.

“All arrangements for the games are complete,” he said, adding that athletes will receive their daily allowances and sports kits on time. Men’s competitions will be held at the Peshawar Sports Complex, Hayatabad Sports Complex, Kohat, and Mardan. Women’s events will take place at Abdul Wali Khan Sports Complex Charsadda, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University Peshawar, Peshawar Board Ground, and Hayatabad Sports Complex.

Men’s competitions will include sports such as badminton, table tennis, squash, athletics, volleyball, karate, football, gymnastics, basketball, boxing, taekwondo, hockey, judo, handball, wushu, archery, jujitsu, tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, snooker, kabaddi, futsal, kickboxing, bodybuilding, Muay Thai, baseball, tug of war, rugby, zor khana, and several others.

Women’s events will feature badminton, table tennis, squash, athletics, volleyball, karate, basketball, taekwondo, judo, hockey, netball, cricket, archery, handball, jujitsu, futsal, throwball, and softball.

Director Sports Operations Jamshed Baloch said that players will be provided with accommodation, TA/DA, uniforms, shoes, and other essential facilities. He reiterated that these will be the biggest games ever held in the province.

He also noted that alongside the Under-21 Games, the Sports Directorate has planned several other events, including Derajat sports events, the Horse and Cattle Show in Peshawar, Jashn-e-Hazara, a sports festival for orphan children, Buner Gul Da Number Festival, traditional sports, polo, ice hockey, skating, national junior championships, a transgender sports event, inter-madrassa competitions, and sports festivals for persons with disabilities and minority communities.
