Sports Projects in Mardan and Peshawar Face Uncertainty

Recent financial disclosures from the Pakistan Sports Board
(PSB) have brought to light a concerning stagnation in two significant sports
development projects within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The revelations raise questions
about project progress, equitable resource distribution, and the PSB's
commitment to transparency.
In Mardan, the construction of a much-anticipated sports
complex appears to have hit a standstill. An allocation of PKR 72.7 million was
made for the project in 2023, yet remarkably, the exact same amount has been
carried over to 2024 without any reported changes or adjustments. This lack of
variation in funding over two years suggests a significant slowdown, if not a
complete halt, in the project's momentum, with no clear data emerging regarding
its progress.
A similar narrative unfolds in Peshawar concerning a
proposed boxing gymnasium. For both 2023 and 2024, a consistent sum of PKR
37.641 million was allocated. The unchanging allocation over two years strongly
indicates either a suspension of work or a complete lack of financial
advancement in the project. This situation is particularly striking when
compared to boxing gym projects in Karachi, Lahore, and Quetta, which received
four times the funding allocated to Peshawar. This disparity reignites
persistent questions about the equitable distribution of resources among the
provinces.
Further scrutiny of the report reveals an increase in
maintenance and administrative expenses for the Pakistan Sports Board and Coaching
Centre in Peshawar. In 2023, these costs amounted to PKR 29.209 million.
However, in 2024, these expenses surged to PKR 36.030 million, despite no
significant new projects or facilities being added to the center. This
escalation in administrative overhead without corresponding infrastructural
development adds another layer to the financial concerns.
Perhaps the most perplexing aspect is the PSB's own
adherence to transparency. While the Pakistan Sports Board routinely demands
audited accounts and reports from various sports federations and associations
annually, it has yet to upload its own annual audit report to its website.
Details for the 2025 accounts are also conspicuously absent. This glaring
omission casts a shadow over the PSB's claims of transparency and raises new
questions about its accountability to the public and the sporting community it
serves.
These findings highlight a critical need for greater
oversight, clearer reporting, and a renewed commitment to the timely and
equitable development of sports infrastructure across Pakistan.
