The ongoing Tartan track project in the Sports Complex, Peshawar, is also suffering from extreme delays and confused decisions and a complete lack of response from the concerned authorities. Because of the delay, now the National Games have taken place without the facility getting completed, which is now causing extreme problems for the players, especially in athletic and football events.

In the recently concluded National Games at Karachi, the athletes from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were fortunate to take home just one bronze medal in athletics. The reasons cited by athletes for such low performance are the lack of a proper Tartan track.

Before the Games took place, it was guaranteed by athletes that it would be finished within a month. Nonetheless, several months after, it is still unfinished. The project originally targeted for completion in August 2024 has not only caused delays but has moved at a snail pace without anything happening to individuals who are supposed to get things done.

According to sources, two foreign experts have been repatriated due to security reasons. However, these days, these experts are giving instructions to the local staff through online guidelines. It is also reported that it is the only Tartan track project underway in Pakistan, and it is being developed under the remote supervision of foreign experts.

There are also serious concerns regarding the financial aspects related to this project. Earlier, the estimated cost for this project stood at 380 million rupees; however, it increased to 680 million rupees. Now there are further increments being talked about. There has been complete silence on the part of theSports Directorate of the province regarding the aforementioned cost revisions. Currently, the monitoring of this project is done by the engineering wing of the same Directorate; however, no reason has been given yet. An RTI petition regarding the cost and other matters pertaining to this project on August 7th is yet to receive any response.

"The Tartan track is not available, and this is strongly affecting football and other sports," say the athletes. They are unable to understand the carelessness displayed by the administration towards them. Meanwhile, there are reports, although unconfirmed, of the use of sub-standard equipment imported from China instead of equipment according to European standard – though this is not confirmed as of writing.

There are still questions being raised regarding the discrepancies between the standard mentioned in the PC-1 and the equipment used."

What reformists who demand transparency are saying is that the project master plan, along with the PC-1, revisions in the cost, and details of material used, must be made public so that it is clear where money is being spent.
