PTVC Misses FIFA World Cup 2022 Media Rights, Suffers Millions in Losses
Islamabad: Pakistan Television Corporation (PTVC) failed to acquire the media rights for FIFA World Cup 2022 for Pakistan, resulting in losses worth millions of rupees, according to an audit report.
The process
for acquiring media rights began in September–October 2021 through the
regional rights holder M/s Viacom-18 and concluded in May 2022,
with M/s A-Sports successfully securing the rights. Despite previously
broadcasting all matches of FIFA World Cups 2014 and 2018, PTVC showed limited
interest and did not act decisively, depriving itself of potential advertising
revenue and denying a significant portion of the population the opportunity to
watch the global event.
The audit
report attributed the failure to the negligence of the then Director of
Sports & Syndication, Dr. Nauman Niaz, and the Chief Organizer Sports, Mr.
Osma Azhar, who were responsible for pursuing the rights. The audit also
noted that no action has been taken against the responsible officials,
highlighting issues of managerial favoritism and weak accountability.
Management
stated that an inquiry committee had held the Director fully responsible and
the Chief Organizer partially responsible, but no corrective measures were
implemented.
Audit
Recommendations:
- Provide a clear explanation for
the failure to acquire FIFA World Cup 2022 media rights.
- Conduct higher-level inquiries
and take strict action against responsible officials.
- Implement measures to prevent
such failures in the future.
