Uncertain Games: Silence, Delays, and Confusion Before December's National Games in Karachi

With weeks remaining until the National Games to be held in December in Karachi, confusion hangs heavy over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's (KPK) preparations. Nobody has an idea when the training camps will open, or whether the selection process has even commenced. Both the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Olympic Association as well as the Provincial Sports Directorate, typically eager to proclaim progress, remain tight-lipped this time.
The provincial cabinet has already cleared funds for both the Youth Games and National Games, but October 14 has come and gone without a single selection notice or camp announcement. The silence is deafening. Officials will, as usual, wake up at the last minute screaming "Bring home gold! " — but by then, it will be too late.
Athletes are due their time to train, prepare, and proudly represent their province and country, not to be hurried into action after months of official disregard.
Further adding to the chaos is the confusion at the provincial government level as well. Uncertainty remains as to who will become the head of the Sports Ministry — a key role that is still up in the air. Earlier, Syed Fakhar Jahan Bacha had genuinely tried to develop sports, but upon leaving, Pakhtun Yar for a short while surfaced and disappeared within a fortnight.
Now that there is a new Director General of Sports in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, hopes ran high. But till now, the DG has been a do-nothing — "cool" on all issues, even when deadlines approach. If this trend is followed, KPK's showing in the National Games would be hampered not for lack of talent, but for lack of planning. The question arises: when would sports administration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa catch up with the passion of its players?
