A serious scandal has erupted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's sports setup, casting doubts on transparency in sports and jeopardizing the future of young sportspeople.

Said Zahir Shah, President of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Hockey Association, sent a letter to the Director General of Sports alleging that hockey coach Naveed Iqbal from District Sawabi is involved in corruption, illegal activities, and even human smuggling.

The letter asserts that Naveed Iqbal purportedly organized spurious trials in foreign countries to entice young players with the promise of international prospects, earning money from them along the way. Spurious advertisements for trials in Malaysia and Thailand were placed, and some players have gone to Belarus and other nations in August 2025. While a few have returned, many are missing, and it is feared they might now be settled illegally in Europe.

Said Zahir Shah declared that Naveed Iqbal's moves are against Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) rules and national security and the future of young players. PHF rules declare that no coach or individual can proclaim international events or trials without PHF permission.

During a video link meeting, the Hockey Association voted unanimously to brand Naveed Iqbal as the "Mastermind of Super Corruption" and denounced him for life. The association further stated it will apprise all concerned embassies, the PHF, and probe agencies to ensure such incidents are avoided in the future.

The following are some serious questions which have arisen due to this incident:

Does the Sports Department have a system for monitoring coaches' activity?

What is being done to ensure young athletes are safe?

If this is possible in organized sports such as hockey, what is happening in sports in general?

Why is the Directorate of Sports so far not given any response or action yet?

Analysts say the scandal lays bare corruption, negligence, and lack of oversight in KP's sports infrastructure. Unprompted inquiry and reform in the recruitment, training, and monitoring of coaches is needed to make it safe and transparent for young players.
