Silence and Scandal: Merged Districts Sports Directorate Under the Scanner

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Merged Districts' Sports Directorate (MDSD) has gone stone cold silent, sparking serious questions on its transparency, performance, and governance. The Directorate is charged with disregarding successive applications for information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, along with a virtual collapse of sporting activity across most of the erstwhile tribal areas.

Sporting life has practically come to an end in all but a handful of Merged Districts. In addition, a number of development schemes are still unfinished even with the grant and release of required funds, indicating major administrative setbacks.

Adding to the woes are claims of lost assets and shady appointments. There have been reports that bicycles given by the UNDP are missing. While the MDSD owned up that the bicycles were turned over to a coach, officials will not say anything more, especially regarding why assets intended for a complex were instead given over to an individual coach.

In this context of administrative decline, political maneuver and skewed policies reign. While people in the tribal areas are said to be instructed to reach a different directorate for their sports events, settled norms are blissfully disregarded to facilitate a few chosen ones.

The scandal has been ignited by an important provincial personality being posted to the MDSD as Director at the behest of a top personality, as per reports. This action is viewed as extremely unfair since the officer will not be able to devote adequate time to either their original position in D.I. Khan or their new position as Director for the Merged Districts. Critics say this action is unfair to the overall Sports Directorate of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as well as to the MDSD.

The delay in responding to RTI requests, the absence of sporting activities, and the general lack of transparency in appointments have taken a heavy toll on public confidence, fuelling questions regarding governance and justice in the Directorate.
