PESHAWAR: The Right to Information (RTI) request made against the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate is still pending despite the lapse of many months.
The complaint, submitted on July 4, 2025, had been registered under complaint number 12868. But no information has so far been provided by the concerned department.
The applicant, through the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Right to Information Act 2013, had requested information on security infrastructure and IT hardware at the Peshawar Sports Complex and Sports Directorate.
The RTI application posed certain questions on CCTV cameras, such as:
Total number of cameras installed
Year of first installation
Number of functional and faulty cameras
Total cost of installation
Record of repairs and maintenance, including costs and dates
Name of the firm or vendor engaged in services
Likewise, computer questions also were:
Total number of computers installed at the Sports Directorate
Organizational departments in which they are mounted
Year-to-year procurement information
Total spending on computers in the last decade
Number of working and faulty units
The candidate had also asked supporting documents, invoices, repair history, and purchase files either in PDF or hard copy.
As per the RTI Act 2013, government departments have the mandate to offer information as requested within the given time period. In this case, though, there has not been any movement so far.
Experts add that transparency is defeated by such delays and public faith is lost. Citizens have also complained, asking why details of expensive equipment and infrastructure are kept secret.
Public spaces contend that if CCTV cameras, which were installed for security purposes, are not functioning and their expenditures are not accounted for, then it is a waste of taxpayers' money.
The case brings to light the imperative of accountability and transparency in institutions such as the Sports Directorate. The biggest question of all remains: when will complaint number 12868 be replied to, and when will the truth be revealed to the public?
