AstroTurf Tragedy in Peshawar – Pakistan's National Sport Takes a Hit

In a disconcerting turn of events that highlights the
long-standing problems in Pakistan's sporting infrastructure, the Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa Hockey Association (KPHA) has officially registered concern
regarding the substandard AstroTurf installed at the Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium,
Peshawar.
An 08-09-2025 letter written to the Director General,
Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), Islamabad, states the turf laid recently as
unplayable, unsafe, and technically defective. The field is plagued by creases,
risky metal nails, and low-leveling, the report says, which makes young players
highly vulnerable to injury.
This is not only a matter of inferior work—but a
monumental wastage of taxpayers' money. The letter says that millions of rupees
were wasted on a turf that does not even live up to basic safety standards. The
KPHA calls it an insult to the game and a betrayal of the future of hockey in
Pakistan.
More alarming is the reference to a formal enquiry
report, which was finished over twelve months ago, but has yet to be released.
Although a document of public interest, containing accountability and
suggestions, it has been quietly buried, perhaps in order to protect the
culprit.
To add insult to injury, the contractor is said to
have bolted out of the country, leaving serious questions regarding the
transparency of the bidding and oversight process. Was there any screening? Who
sanctioned the payments? Why was the work authorized with such defects?
The KPHA has also issued a strong appeal to the Prime
Minister of Pakistan, who is also the Patron-in-Chief of Hockey, to take
cognizance and have justice delivered. The association has asked for:
The enquiry report be published at once.
Responsibility be established, and
Remedial action be taken to safeguard the future of
young players.
This is not merely a matter of a field. It is a matter
of accountability in public expenditures, protection of youth athletes, and the
future of national hockey in a nation that once dominated the game
internationally.
If immediate action is not taken, Pakistan will
jeopardize the next generation of hockey players and further deplete public
confidence in sports administration.
