Peshawar's Sports Secrets: RTI Stonewalled on Security & IT at Key Complex

The very nature of public trust relies on transparency, yet in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a disturbing quiet has descended over the Directorate of Sports and the Peshawar Sports Complex. What could have been an elementary question about information, a basic right as per the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Right to Information Act 2013, has instead revealed a distressing absence of accountability, casting a long shadow over the administration of key public assets.

It all began on July 4th, when a conscientious citizen, wielding the authority of the RTI Act, requested vital information regarding the security and IT infrastructure of these well-known establishments. The questions were straightforward and essential: How many CCTV cameras are there at the Peshawar Sports Complex? When were they installed, and how many of them are actually functional? What were the expenses, and who maintains them? Likewise, the citizen inquired about the computers at the Directorate of Sports: how many there are, where they are being used, and ten years of purchase records and spending.

The legislation is unequivocal: information of this sort must be delivered within a specified period. But as July 29th came, the answer was deafening silence. No news, no information, just a creepy silence. This is not merely a bureaucratic mistake; it's a frontal assault on the ethos of transparency which public institutions are supposed to represent.

This intentional withholding of information has created a firestorm of interest among the media and citizens. In an era where demands for accountability are greater than they ever have been, the refusal to release even simple information about security cameras and IT equipment cries out for more significant problems. Experts are quick to note that such secrecy fosters suspicion, inspiring fears of mismanagement, possible corruption, and an acute deficiency in answerability. And if the very instruments designed to provide security and efficiency are veiled in secrecy, what else is being concealed?

The right of the people to know is not a favor; it is the foundation of sound administration. The delay from the Peshawar Sports Complex and Directorate of Sports is not only an administrative delay; it's a betrayal of public trust. Until such important information is made known, the questions will only become louder, and the specter of doubt will forever hang over these important public institutions.
