Peshawar Schools to be provided with Playgrounds and Indoor Game Halls

As part of the ambitious Good Governance Roadmap for 2025-26, the Elementary and Secondary Education Department had taken a giant leap: all primary, middle, high, and higher secondary schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would soon boast good sports facilities.

The need for play and physical activity had been sacrificed for far too long, but not anymore. This new policy announced that sports were to be accorded equal importance with studies.

The order was straightforward: schools that had open space available were to create playgrounds. Indoor games facilities would be given for those schools in densely populated areas with not enough outdoor space. This was not a recommendation; it was an edict designed to promote healthy-rounded development for all children.

Male and female District Education Officers were directed to obtain detailed information, school by school, cluster by cluster, forthwith. The format was strict – no deviations, no additions. They had to record the name of the school, EMIS code, gender (boys/girls), district, and importantly, state "Yes" or "No" for the existence of space for a playground or indoor games.

The race against time was real. The critical information, in both soft copy and handwritten form, must be sent in quickly through a special WhatsApp number. Decision-making at the department was prepared to happen in a timely manner, and the exchange of information was paramount to initiating this change project.

The word spread subtly among the education community, reigniting hope. Teachers imagined colourful schoolyards where children's laughter filled the air, no longer stuck in classrooms during recess. Students imagined good pitches for cricket and football, or special areas for carrom and chess through the hot summers.

This project was not about building physical rooms; it was about building a healthier, more active generation. It was about recognizing that play is not a distraction from learning but an integral part of it, fostering discipline, teamwork, and a lifelong love for physical activity.

As the new academic year approached, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was poised to embark on a journey of transforming education, one playground and indoor game facility at a time. The future of its students was looking brighter, and certainly, more active.
