Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)
Sports Department is facing severe criticism for its continued silence on a
crucial Right to Information (RTI) request filed on March 13, 2025. This
persistent failure to respond has raised serious questions about transparency
within the department, particularly concerning its fuel and fleet management.
The RTI request, submitted under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Right to Information Act 2013, sought details regarding Office Order No.
DG/Sports/Admin/2023-24/1328-31, dated November 1, 2023. This specific order
transferred authority for fleet and fuel management to the Director of
Development.
Under the law, a concerned public body is obligated to
respond within 10 working days. However, over two months have passed, and the
applicant has received neither a response nor any explanation for the delay. A
written reminder was also sent but has reportedly been ignored.
The applicant, a research journalist, stated that this
conduct is not an isolated incident but rather a pattern of information
suppression within the Sports Department, especially when it pertains to the
use of funds, vehicles, and fuel.
"When it comes to the use of public resources, the
public has a right to know where and how their money is being spent.
Withholding information is a breach of trust," the journalist emphasized.
What the RTI Request Demanded:
The request specifically asked for:
A copy of Office Order No. DG/Sports/Admin/2023-24/1328-31.
All documents related to the transfer process of fleet and
fuel management, including internal correspondence or approval notices.
Journalists, civil society organizations, and RTI experts
are now urging the RTI Commission Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to take immediate notice
of this matter and compel the Sports Department to provide the information in
accordance with the law. The department's silence is not only a legal violation
but also erodes public trust in governmental institutions. If the information
is not provided in the coming days, there is a strong possibility the case will
be escalated to higher authorities.
