From Pride of Performance to Political Pawn: Squash Legend Humiliated by Sports Directorate

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate is again in the news for allegedly undermining merit and offending a national hero. Mohibullah Jr., a former world number two squash player and holder of the prestigious Pride of Performance award, was purportedly instructed to obtain a recommendation from the Sports Minister for securing a coaching job. This is despite his great career and body of work that involves producing internationally renowned sportspersons.
On the directives of Mohibullah Jr., who is a former director of the Pakistan Sports Board's Peshawar center and has a squash court named after him, and who was looking for a daily wage job in the directorate, the latter was instead advised by Chief Coach Shafqatullah to go and meet with the Sports Minister for a recommendation.
This case has highlighted a disturbing trend in the directorate. Intelligencers say a "troika" of officials have been abusing the hiring process, ushering in a privileged circle of day-by-day wage workers who have been on the payroll for as long as eight years. These officials are said to be using their authority to edge out competent individuals such as Mohibullah Jr. in favor of less-meritorious candidates while exhibiting a "bad behavior" towards those who oppose them.
Critics say that this "double-edged policy" not only shows disrespect to worthy athletes but also exposes the government's so-called commitment to merit and transparency as a sham. The issue depicts a root problem in sports administration of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where political maneuvering and personal relationships play more weight than a player's performance or merit.
This incident has outraged the sports fraternity and reiterates that in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, not a sportsperson's performance on the field but his or her connections in the office guarantee a job.
