The Silent Arena of Hasan Khel: A Legacy of Neglect
Musarrat ullah Jan – Kikxnow
The Hasan Khel Ground, nestled deep within Pakistan's merged tribal districts, tells a sobering story of ambition met with neglect. Completed in 2021 with a substantial investment of millions of rupees, it was envisioned as a bustling center for sports. Today, however, it stands as a forgotten monument, its once-promising pitches silent and its stands empty. Roughly 100 kilometers from Peshawar, this sprawling venue has seen sporting activities grind to a halt. The District Sports Office (DSO) and other relevant authorities, meant to champion its purpose, have remained frustratingly inert, mere spectators to its slow decay.
For years, the ground suffered from a critical lack of oversight. An officer was assigned additional charge, but without any real authority or financial support, their role was purely nominal. Initial attempts to staff the facility quickly failed; the absence of basic amenities and a complete lack of activities drove away any prospective personnel. The dream of a vibrant sports hub, once so bright, slowly faded into a desolate reality.
The years of quiet neglect were abruptly shattered a week ago by the sound of gunfire. This shocking incident, and only this incident, seemed to jar officials from their slumber. Suddenly, the "importance" of Hasan Khel Ground was remembered, sparking a belated flurry of administrative activity. But this sudden urgency begs a critical question: after years of blatant disregard, how can anyone genuinely be held accountable now? The blame lies not with a single event, but with a systemic failure that has spanned years.
The colossal investment poured into this ground has been a recurring subject of media scrutiny. Journalists have tirelessly questioned why such a significant expenditure has yielded absolutely no benefit for the public. Yet, every inquiry has been met with the same resounding silence.
Now, in the wake of the regrettable shooting, officials are scrambling to make perfunctory appointments and implement superficial changes. But the fundamental issue persists: if the goal is to genuinely promote sports in these merged districts, where are the necessary funds? If the DSO can't even visit the area, who will step up to inspire the youth and draw them to these expensively built, yet tragically neglected, fields?
Hasan Khel Ground is far more than just a patch of land; it embodies the hopes, aspirations, and potential for development of the youth in the merged tribal areas. If this pervasive indifference continues, projects like Hasan Khel will remain nothing more than ink on official documents, destined to crumble into dust in the harsh light of reality.
