The Five Thousand Rupee Stick: KP Sports shaken by Hockey Stick Scandal
Musarrat Ullah Jan - KikxNow
Scurrilous questions are now being raised regarding the cost
and quality of hockey sticks bought for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)
Inter-Regional matches. It is reported that shoddy quality hockey sticks worth
only 700 rupees each were bought by the Provincial Sports Directorate for a
whopping 5,000 rupees per stick. This stark difference indicates blatant
financial malpractices and corruption.
Sources indicate that the officials who sanctioned these
sticks are unknown. But it's claimed these low-quality sticks were bought in
the name of a popular brand, "Matador." Their inferior quality came
under the limelight during a match between Bannu and Peshawar when a stick
broke in the middle of a game when a female player was playing with it. This
not only put the athlete at risk but also raised questions about the integrity
of the league.
Allegations have emerged of a "mafia" involved in
these purchases, selling inferior quality equipment at higher prices to the
Sports Directorate for illegal gains. The Provincial Hockey Association sources
have assured the poor quality of these sticks and admitted to receiving
complaints. They also verified the case of the breaking stick of the female
player during the Bannu-Peshawar match.
Experts recommend that if the Anti-Corruption Department is
serious about this situation, they should formally approach the Provincial
Hockey Association to confirm these grievances. The records of the Association
and witnesses would be critical evidence that these sticks were not suitable
for use.
Some of the key questions that need to be answered are: Who
are the high-ranking Sports Department officials who sanctioned these hockey
sticks? Was any quality control or testing procedure adopted while acquiring
them? Was there an open tender or quotation process, or was the whole deal done
in secret?
This case is a stark reminder of a greater problem wherein
billions are being spent on the pretext of sports, but the real paymasters are
neither the sportsperson nor the sport itself. Corruption and nepotism have
sadly soiled the sporting landscape. Sporting circles and civil society are
calling for an open inquiry into this case and firm action against all
officials who are found to be involved in these financial malpractices. They
also call for total openness in all future procurement procedures in order to
protect the integrity of national sports.
