Mardan Sports Complex Experiences Revenue Drop, But Swimming Pool is a Splash!

The Mardan Sports Complex witnessed an interesting pattern of income in the last two financial years. While its total revenue dipped sharply, the swimming pool defied the trend, proving itself to be an unexpected story of success.

In the financial year 2023-24, a total revenue of PKR 4,917,100 was earned by the Mardan Sports Complex. Of this, the contribution of the swimming pool was a respectable PKR 773,600. But the following financial year, 2024-25, had a different story to tell. The total revenue of the complex collapsed to PKR 2,590,100 – a whopping decline of around 47%. But against this grim backdrop of falling revenues, the swimming pool stole the show, its revenues actually rising to PKR 931,900.

Data gained via a Right to Information (RTI) application underscored this glaring difference. The close to 47% reduction in the complex's total revenue evokes questions on numerous factors, ranging from administrative efficacy, facility availability, or even managerial mismanagement. On the other hand, the swimming pool's unabated growth is indicative of its popularity among people or even better management within that particular area of the complex.

This budgetary overview highlights the very serious need to make annual income and expense information of such institutions as sports complexes publicly available. These are not only numbers; these are public facilities and taxpayers' funds. Transparency is essential to gauge the performance of such entities and hold them accountable.
