Mardan Sports Complex: A ₹85.38 Crore Project Disintegrating

Mardan – What was once celebrated as being amongst the biggest sports complexes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after Peshawar, the Mardan Sports Complex is today a source of neglectful building, bureaucratic lassitude, and squandered public money.

Built at a cost of Rs. 85.38 million in 30 months, the facility was intended to host international sporting events, with a state-of-the-art synthetic hockey turf. But now, that same turf is obviously battered, patched up, and abandoned.

In spite of a maintenance responsibility for 10 years stipulated in the contract, the grounds now bear evidence of poor material and amateurish repair work. Far from being a venue where the champions of the future prepare, it has become a visual representation of mismanagement.

What is worse is that while in other districts the post of only a District Sports Officer (DSO) is stationed, Mardan also has a DSO as well as a Grade-18 Regional Sports Officer (RSO). But neither officer has ever brought the deteriorated state of the ground to the notice of the Sports Directorate. This silence is disturbing.

 Who is Responsible?

Why did the Sports Directorate fail to do a physical inspection?

Why are the DSO and RSO mum?

Where is the contractor now?

Is this mere negligence, or corruption?

This is not about a damaged turf. It's about damaged trust. The youth of Mardan deserve better facilities, transparent governance, and accountability. It's time for a serious audit, a public investigation, and prompt repair of what should be a source of pride — not shame.
