Kohat Sports Officer Caught in Lie: RTI Request Exposes Fake Information

Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – A severe breach of the Right to Information (RTI) Act 2013, a transparency law in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has come to light. The District Sports Officer (DSO) Kohat attempted to mislead the public by providing a false response to a citizen's information request.

The citizen had filed an RTI application seeking a list of daily-wage employees working at the DSO Kohat's office. After a significant delay, the DSO issued a written reply, stating, "There are no daily-wage employees appointed in our office." This claim, however, turned out to be entirely false.

Just yesterday, an official list released by the Sports Directorate Khyber Pakhtunkhwa revealed the names of two daily-wage employees who are indeed working in the DSO Kohat's office. This revelation is not merely a case of negligence but a deliberate attempt to conceal public information – a criminal offense under the law.

The RTI law mandates the accurate, complete, and timely provision of information. Providing false information is a punishable offense. This act raises serious questions about the Sports Department's record transparency, the utilization of funds, and potentially illegal hirings.

When a government official lies in writing, it undermines the credibility of the state system. In such cases, the District Sports Office can face a penalty of twenty-five thousand rupees upon complaint. This is not a minor error but a deliberate attempt to suppress a citizen's legal right to information, and strict action is imperative.
