Veteran journalist Masrat Ullah Jan has formally approached the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Right to Information (RTI) Commission against the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority (CTA) for non-supply of desired information. The complaint, made on July 11, 2025, pertains to a previous RTI application (No. 12677) made on May 9, 2025.

Jan's initial query sought vital information about the Tourism Police motorbikes, i.e., those deployed for tourism activities in Peshawar and other districts. The details sought included:

Monthly fuel usage

Budgetary allocation and spend

Status of usage (field or office)

Name, designation, and duties of staff deployed in Peshawar

Logbooks, maintenance reports, and possible planning reports

Even after the 10 to 30 day legal period of response, the CTA neither furnished the information nor did it give any updates. This transparency issue led Jan to approach the RTI Commission in an effort to hold the department to account according to the law.

"Transparency in the government and public information accessibility are constitutional rights of all citizens," said Masrat Ullah Jan. "Being aware of the Tourist Police's motorbike use and funds is a public interest issue, and silence around it gives rise to numerous questions."

Experts opine that if the CTA has actually withheld information, it is a violation of the RTI Act 2013 on a serious scale, and action by the commission is expected. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa RTI Commission has the constitutional mandate to immediately take cognizance of such cases and direct the release of information sought.
