Dry Turf, Shattered Sprinklers: Bajaur Athletes Worry About Injuries at Abandoned Sports Complex
Musarrat Ullah Jan- Kikxnow
Bajaur — Reported negligence and poor facilities on the part
of the Sports Directorate for Merged Districts have again caused difficulties
for sports personnel in Bajaur. For the last four days, the hockey turf at the
Bajaur Sports Complex has gone dry, with the water sprinklers that were meant
to water the grounds being totally non-functional.
Sources say the main cause of the non-functional sprinklers
is malfunctioning machinery. The administration, however, is said to be citing
low voltage as the reason the machinery could not function. The truth,
according to sources, is that the sprinkler system has not been maintained,
thus leaving the whole turf dry, prompting players to refuse to train on it for
fear of being hurt.
Well-placed sources affirm that the situation has been the
same for three days now, with no repair or other arrangements initiated by the
administration. Also, after a volatile on-the-spot situation, some officials
deployed there are said to be applying for transfers, which has led to the
total abandonment of the turf and other facilities.
It is not just restricting the training of players but also
putting their physical safety in jeopardy. Local players of Bajaur feel highly
frustrated by this apathy.
