The Untouchable Wing of the Provincial Sports Directorate – Sports Destroyed, Billions Wasted, and Complete Silence
Peshawar – The claims of promoting sports in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa exist only on paper. In reality, the “Works and Implementation Wing” of the Provincial Sports Directorate has become completely immune to accountability, policy, and transparency.
No policies
are followed, no two-year planning exists – even though the Chief Secretary of
KP recently announced that officials posted for over two years would be
transferred. But this wing seems to be above such rules.Worse, there are no
responses to public inquiries, as if this wing operates like a state within a
state.
When RTI
(Right to Information) requests are filed for basic public details, the response
is: "This is not our job" – even though this wing operates under the
Secretary of Sports. The question is: If it’s not their job, who is spending
millions in public funds?
At Islamia
College's historic hockey ground, the turf project supervised by this very wing
is now in ruins. There is no water for the turf, civil work is substandard, and
the wing refuses to respond – considering public accountability beneath their
status.
Charsadda’s
hockey ground is another disaster – poor materials used, uneven surface, failed
drainage system, and zero oversight. RTI questions about it remain unanswered.
In
Peshawar’s Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium, over 120 million rupees from public taxes
were spent. Yet within just a year and a half, the sprinklers failed, the turf
base deteriorated, and the water machines broke down.
A ridiculous
Rs 9,000 was claimed for installing a single “hole,” which is now also
unusable. The Pakistan Sports Board approached the Works Department for
explanations, while even the Sports Directorate itself declared the ground
substandard. Still, no action has been taken.
From January
7, 2025, to May 1, several RTI requests were filed, asking:
The current
condition of hockey grounds
A list of
completed sports complexes
Details of
staff
BOQs, rate
analyses, and financial approval records
To this day
– no answers, no inquiries, no file movement.
Has the RTI
law in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa become a joke?
This is not
mere negligence — it is criminal mismanagement, gross incompetence, and likely
corruption.
Where are
the billions allocated in the name of sports going?
Why are all
grounds crumbling, machines broken, and facilities missing?
