KP Swimmers Beg for Better Conditions at Adil Khan Swimming Pool
Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa professional swimmers have made a passionate appeal to Mr. Tashfeen Haider, Director General Sports Department, regarding deplorable conditions at Adil Khan Swimming Pool. The swimmers, who hope to play for Pakistan in both national and international competitions, stated that the state of the facility is compromising their practice and creating serious health hazards.
In a letter to Mr. Haider, the swimmers thanked him for his recent initiatives to manage sports facilities throughout the province. Nevertheless, they particularly pointed out to him the Adil Khan Swimming Pool with a description of a series of worrying problems.
"The quality of the water in the swimming pool is very poor, which not only hinders training but is unhealthy too," the letter read. Swimmers complained of itching and skin rashes after visiting the pool, a sign of unhealthy conditions.
One of the key issues raised is the lack of a permanent or experienced coach, with the athletes left without important technical advice. In addition, the swimmers pointed out a deficiency of an effective cleaning system, where no guidelines for users to shower prior to using the pool or the restrooms existed, which, compounded by the water quality problem, added to the issue.
The swimmers have asked Mr. Haider to make an unannounced inspection at the pool in the late hours of the day to see things for himself. They also asked a number of immediate measures to be taken:
Reserved morning training hours to prevent congestion and ease practice during summer vacations.
Compulsory showering of all pool attendees before going into the water.
Fixing a permanent, trained coach.
Regular procedures for purifying the water.
With the National Games and SAARC games next year on the cards, the athletes highlighted the pressing need for a facilitatory training arena. "We desire to excel at the international front, not just representing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but also Pakistan," they said.
The swimmers also requested for a personal meeting with Mr. Haider to express their grievances and issues in person.
