Daily Wage Workers at Peshawar Sports Complex Deprived of Promised Pay

PESHAWAR – Daily wage employees working at the Adil Khan Swimming Pool, located within the Peshawar Sports Complex, have not received the additional payments promised to them over a month ago. The workers were assured they would be paid Rs. 1,000 per day if they agreed not to take their usual weekly days off on Saturdays and Sundays during the busy summer swimming season.

These employees, reportedly numbering ten, had been taking weekends off previously. However, with the swimming pool attracting a large number of visitors during the warmer months, management requested them to forgo their off days in exchange for extra daily compensation.

One worker, speaking on condition of anonymity, shared:

"We were told that if we didn’t take leave on Saturdays and Sundays, we would be paid daily wages because of the high visitor turnout at the pool on weekends. We canceled our rest days, hoping to earn a bit more, but it's been more than a month and we haven’t received any payment."

These workers are not only assigned gatekeeping duties but are also tasked with providing security services—without receiving any financial compensation for the extended responsibilities.

"In these times of rising inflation, even a single day off is valuable. But financial pressure forced us to give it up, hoping we would be paid," the worker said.

He further lamented the disparity:

"The officers stationed at the swimming pool are earning handsome salaries in the hundreds of thousands, while we are being forced to work without pay. This is outright injustice and exploitation."

The affected daily wage workers have appealed to the Director General of Sports and the Minister for Sports, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to take urgent notice of the matter and ensure that they are paid the compensation they were promised.
