Abbottabad Opens National Karate Championship Amidst Fervor and Patriotic Zeal
Abbottabad, Pakistan – The 31st National Karate Championship, the 17th National Women's Karate Championship, and the 6th Cadet & Junior Karate Championship have formally opened in Abbottabad, a milestone moment as the city hosts a national-level karate competition for the first time. The lively opening ceremony at the historical hall of Government Graduate College attracted more than 300 keen athletes from all over the country, covering all four provinces, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan Army, WAPDA, Police, Railways, and HEC.
The choice to host the championships in Abbottabad, which enjoys a good climate, was a relief for participants and visitors alike, providing a clean break from hotter cities. The championship, at the college hall initially set up in 1953 by then Chief Minister Abdul Qayyum Khan, drew a huge and energetic audience. Local players, college students, and sports enthusiasts packed the hall, clear evidence of the youth of Abbottabad's abiding interest in sports.
The championship was officially opened by Provincial Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Syed Fakhar, who cut the ribbon. He was accompanied by a strong lineup of officials such as Director General Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tashfeen Haider, Deputy Commissioner Abbottabad Sanaullah, Pakistan Karate Federation Chairman Muhammad Jahangir, and Secretary Andaleeb Sindhu, among others.
Minister Fakhar personally interfaced with the athletes and officials, appreciating their passion for the sport. He declared lucrative cash awards for outstanding performers: Rs. 200,000 for the first position, Rs. 100,000 for the second position, and Rs. 75,000 for the third position, along with another Rs. 50,000 for winning teams. During his speech, the Minister underlined the central role of sports in enabling constructive youth engagement. He reinforced the resolve of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government towards encouraging sports as per the vision of Chairman Imran Khan and Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur. He vowed that talented sportsmen in all sports would be provided with equal chances to shine domestically and internationally.
Looking ahead, Minister Syed Fakhar Jahan announced that in August there will be a sports festival in Swat Valley consisting of multiple regional and national events. This will be followed by the eagerly awaited Hazara Games. He especially complimented the robust Balochistan participation, acknowledging the rich martial arts skills available in the province.
Director General Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tashfeen Haider extended a warm welcome to every guest, athletes, and officials and promised an intention to host such competitions once a year to create better opportunities for athletes to polish their skills. He also spoke of his own liking towards Taekwondo, being content that national-level competitions are now being organized in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In spite of the fact that Abbottabad did not have a big sports directorate building, joint coordination of the district and regional sports offices and the administration of Sports Directorate Khyber Pakhtunkhwa made event management smooth. This impressive task highlights that hard work and dedication can overcome constraints of resources to successfully organize major events.
This championship is an experience of utmost importance for athletes from all around the country and is a big-time driving force for the youth of Abbottabad to take up sports and develop their potential.
