🏑 Syed Zahir Shah Highlights KP’s Hockey Revival, Discipline, and Vision for the Future

In a detailed media talk at the historic Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium in Peshawar, President of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Hockey Association, Syed Zahir Shah, shed light on the province’s recent hockey achievements, administrative challenges, and future plans to uplift the sport.

Zahir Shah shared that hockey activities in the province have remained active for the past eight months, with significant youth participation. In September 2024, KP fielded two teams in the Junior National Hockey Championship camps. One team reached the semifinals but lost 4–3 to Pakistan Customs, who went on to win the championship. The second KP team exited at the quarterfinal stage.

Following this, the team participated in the Quaid-e-Azam Games, where they secured a silver medal — a major milestone for the province. KP then competed in the National Championship in Karachi, progressing to the pre-quarterfinals and narrowly missing the quarters due to goal average despite a commendable performance.

The Second Chief of Army Staff Hockey Championship, organized nationwide by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), was also held across all districts of KP. Zahir Shah emphasized that the tournament was open to every registered club and player, with repeated announcements encouraging new clubs to register officially with their respective districts for eligibility.

After district-level matches, divisional rounds were conducted, leading up to a Regional Championship in Charsadda, where the PHF President attended as the chief guest. The grand finale took place in Lahore, featuring 10 top teams, including KP’s Peshawar and Mardan, both of which reached the semifinals. Civil Quarters Club claimed third position in the tournament.

The momentum continued as Peshawar Region defeated Bannu Region in the Inter-Regional Championship, clinching the trophy for the second time. These activities ran consistently from September 2024 to February 2025.

Zahir Shah firmly stated that all district and provincial bodies must operate under PHF's constitution and directives. Any deviation, especially from self-proclaimed clubs or individuals bypassing official channels to approach the provincial Sports Directorate, would not be tolerated. He urged the Director General Sports KP to entertain only those communications that come through proper association channels, as all recognized clubs are affiliated with the KP Hockey Association and ultimately with PHF.

Addressing the current academic schedule, he noted that many young players are engaged in matriculation and intermediate exams. After exams, summer hockey camps will be launched across the province, featuring expert coaches such as Yasir Islam, Asif Islam, Zia-ur-Rehman Binori, and Haroon Rasheed, an international umpire. Coaching and umpiring certification courses will also be held.

In his closing remarks, Syed Zahir Shah advised all players, clubs, and their representatives to uphold discipline and follow legal procedures. “Only through law and order can the sport flourish,” he concluded.
