Syed Aqil Shah Inaugurates Snooker Academy in Peshawar, Raises Bold Questions About Missing Equipment

Former President of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Olympic Association, Syed Aqil Shah, inaugurated a new snooker academy in Peshawar Cantt, marking another step toward promoting cue sports in the region. Addressing the attendees at the opening ceremony, he appreciated the initiative, calling it a positive opportunity for youth engagement in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Sharing a personal anecdote, Shah recalled a past effort where he brought snooker equipment from Singapore and Delhi—a time when such gear was rare in Peshawar. He mentioned an encounter with Imran Khan during a flight from Delhi, where Khan had asked about the equipment he was carrying. Shah told him it was snooker gear, brought in to help promote the sport locally. “Back then, you couldn’t find it here. Things have changed now,” he added.

He also praised the provincial Sports Directorate for establishing a snooker academy at the Hayatabad Sports Complex. However, Shah didn’t hold back from raising an important issue—he questioned the whereabouts of a full snooker table that was provided to the Peshawar Sports Complex during his tenure as Sports Minister. “That table was our property,” he said, demanding its return and urging the relevant authorities to take action.

In a significant announcement, Shah revealed that due to continuous efforts—especially those of his nephew, who has been instrumental in sports development—the military will soon become part of the KP Olympic family. He cited the army’s support in promoting cricket, especially through venues like Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium, as a sign of their growing involvement. “Institutional support is essential for the growth of sports, and we’re seeing real progress thanks to persistent work,” he added.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by KP Olympic Association Secretary Zulfiqar Butt and Taekwondo Association representative Ilyas Afridi.
