Illegal Residence Uncovered in District Sports Office Building, Peshawar
Peshawar - An alarming misuse of public sports infrastructure has been uncovered in Peshawar, where the second floor of the District Sports Office (DSO) building is reportedly being used as an unauthorized residential facility by students and other individuals. Eyewitnesses report that the area is being used like a private hostel, complete with round-the-clock air conditioner use — all within a facility meant for athletic administration and development.
Sources confirm that the space has not been officially
designated or approved for residential purposes by either the provincial Sports
Directorate or the district administration. Yet, multiple individuals with no
formal association with sports are living there. Residents of the area told
this reporter that the occupants are neither athletes nor office staff, though
some of them can be seen playing football in the evenings — possibly to avoid
suspicion.
A departmental insider, speaking on condition of anonymity,
remarked:
"This is a complete lack of transparency. Students are
living here, and some outsiders as well. This feels less like a sports office
and more like a private guest house. The ACs run day and night — but who’s
paying the bill?"
The situation points to an apparent case of public property
misuse and could indicate corruption and mismanagement of state resources. The
sports department has not issued any formal accommodation permits for the
building, raising serious questions about who allowed this arrangement and
under what terms.
Local athletes and sports organizations are demanding a full
inquiry.
"This facility was meant for athletes, not for private
rentals. Our youth are being deprived of sports facilities while these rooms
are given out like rental property," said a former district-level athlete.
There are concerns that senior officials may be aware of the
situation but are deliberately ignoring it in exchange for personal gain,
possibly rent or other informal arrangements. If proven true, this would mark
yet another scandal in the mismanagement of sports infrastructure in Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa — a province already plagued by multiple reports of corruption in
sports-related affairs.
