Information Denied: Sports Directorate Faces Scrutiny Over Delayed RTI Response

Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa –  A Peshawar resident's attempt to access information about the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate's operations has been met with silence, prompting a formal reminder letter.  The citizen filed a Right to Information (RTI) request on January 8, 2025, seeking details about various aspects of the directorate's activities, including men's trials, campus development, equipment procurement, Quaid-e-Azam Games preparations, post-games funding, and lists of officials and players.  The legally mandated 15-day response period expired on February 17, 2025, without any communication from the Sports Directorate.

Undeterred, the citizen sent a reminder letter on February 17, 2025, demanding immediate release of the requested information.  The RTI application, filed under the Access to Information Act, 2013, specifically seeks the following:

Trials Funding: The total budget allocated for men's trials, along with a detailed breakdown of which teams received funding.

Campus and Equipment Funding: The amount of funds designated for campus development and equipment purchases, including details of miscellaneous campus funds, the process for equipment procurement, vendor information, and copies of receipts or invoices.

Quaid-e-Azam Games Preparation Funding: The total funds allocated by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for preparations related to the Quaid-e-Azam Games.

Post-Games Funding: The amount and source of funds provided for teams' return travel to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after the games.

Officer and Player Lists: Complete lists of male and female officers involved in the 15 games (including names and positions) and male and female players selected for the games (including names and respective teams).

The delay in responding to the RTI request has raised concerns among local residents.  They are calling for prompt disclosure of the requested information to enable public scrutiny of the Sports Directorate's performance and the utilization of public funds.  The lack of transparency has fueled speculation and underscored the importance of access to information in ensuring accountability within government bodies.  The citizen's persistence in pursuing the RTI request highlights the ongoing struggle for transparency and public oversight in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
