Peshawar: Rs 8 Million Hockey Turf Cleaning Equipment Allowed to Rust in Inconsideration
The state-of-the-art Rs. 8 million hockey turf cleaning
machine purchased by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate remains dusting
and dirty in this scenario of extreme lack of administrative oversight. Costly
equipment for maintaining pristine conditions of hockey turfs has been exposed
to dust, grime, and waterlogging without any proper cleaning and protective
measures.
This is a sad but telling episode of negligence and lack of
proper management in the sports sector. The machine, purchased in 2020 when
former DG Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Asfandyar Khattak, was at the helm, was
first used for hockey turf maintenance at Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium, Peshawar
during the provincial hockey league. Later on, it was given on temporary lease
to the Pakistan Air Force to use it for their own turf maintenance purposes.
However, when it came back, the machine was unceremoniously
abandoned in an open area and parked beside other ordinary vehicles. It was not
provided with protective covering to withstand the adverse weather conditions,
dust, and potential damage. Such a blatant disregard for a valuable public
asset has raised the concern of stakeholders and enthusiasts in sports.
They fear that continued negligence may make the machine
useless, thereby wasting a sizeable amount of public funds. The situation has
stirred the Provincial Sports Minister and the current DG Sports into making
demands for immediate action from the government. The stakeholders demand that
the machine be cleaned promptly, maintained in a proper manner, and adequately
covered to prevent further deterioration.
This is an eye-opener for the fact that the sports sector
critically needs to have more accountability and transparency. The public funds
are to be used efficiently to ensure development and sustainability of sports
infrastructure in the province.
