Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate is grappling with a serious issue of absenteeism among its staff, particularly in the absence of the Director General (DG) who is currently performing Umrah in Saudi Arabia.
Despite the presence of the office of the Sports Minister in the directorate , many permanent employees have developed a culture of laxity since there is no oversight and accountability. Many have even taken advantage of the situation by often reporting to work without any fear of the consequences.
The attendance system operated by the directorate and based on manual signature sheets is another problem that encourages this trend. Though designed for daily wage employees, it has been abused to some extent by permanent employees. Some officers have opted to sign the attendance register once a week and spend most of the working time absent. Others pretend to be working in the field while sitting at home.
The scenario is also alarming in the integrated districts, where the Sports Directorate is supposed to popularize sports. Most of the employees here also frequently remain absent from their duty, which decreases the productivity and efficiency of the department.
The government itself has specific regulations about the attendance requirement of the public servants, but this Sports
Directorate, not upholding such laws, led to the apathy in the working attitudes of employees. It also questions whether the salary that is paid to them could be an unnecessary expenditure to the nation.
To address this problem, sports circles recommend strict monitoring of attendance systems such as biometric attendance or time and attendance software . People violating attendance rules must also face disciplinary action.
This ongoing crisis calls for enhanced governance and accountability within the Sports Directorate to ensure the effective delivery of public services.
